TRICHOLOGY
Hair is a filamentous, usually pigmented outgrowth from the skin found only on mammals. These thin strands grow from hair follicles in the deeper portion of the skin (dermis) and protrude the outer skin layer (epidermis). Each fiber is composed of non-living cells primarily made of the protein keratin.
TYPES OF HAIR
Humans have three different types of hair:
1. Lanugo – very thin, soft, usually unpigmented hair that covers the unborn or newborn human.
2. Vellus – hair the short, fine, “peach fuzz” body hair that grows in most places on the human body in both sexes. It covers most of the body during childhood.
3. Terminal hair – longer, coarser, thicker and darker fully developed hairs. The
conversion from vellus to terminal is stimulated by androgenic hormones during
Puberty.
What is Trichology?
It is the science of the structure, function and diseases of the human hair. In a clinical sense,Trichology is the diagnosis and treatment of disorders and diseases of the scalp and hair.
PHYSIOLOGY OF HAIR
Hair follicle: This is the structure from which the hair grows anchored in the dermis,
extending into subcutaneous tissue. The hair follicle contains various components, including the hair bulb, papilla, and sebaceous gland.
1. Hair bulb: Located at the base of the follicle , contains dividing cells producing hair shaft and also contains melanocytes that determine the hair colour.
2. Papilla: Situated at the bottom of the hair bulb, composed of connective tissue and blood vessels, supplies nutrients and oxygen for hair growth.
3. Sebaceous gland: Attached to follicle, produces sebum that moisturizes and protects the hair and skin, and prevents dryness &; brittleness.
4. Arrector pili muscle: Tiny muscle attached to follicle and dermis, contracts causing the hair to stand upright (goosebumps), regulates body temperature by trapping heat.
5. Hair shaft: Visible part of hair extending beyond skin surface, composed of keratin protein.
LAYERS OF HAIR SHAFT
- Medulla: The innermost layer of the hair shaft, typically present in thick or
coarse hairs. It is composed of loosely packed cells and air spaces. - Cortex: The middle layer, containing elongated cells filled with keratin fibers.
The cortex provides the hair with strength, elasticity, and colour - Cuticle: The outermost layer, consisting of overlapping scales that protect the
inner layers of the hair. It also helps to retain moisture within the hair shaft.
ANATOMY
The Four Stages of the Hair Growth Cycle: Anagen, Catagen, Telogen & Exogen.
Anagen Phase
Also known as the ‘Growth Phase’ or ‘Active Phase’, the Anagen Phase is when the cells in the root of your hair are most rapidly dividing so more new hair is formed.
Catagen phase
Following the Anagen Phase, your hair cycle enters a short transitional phase known as the Catagen Phase, which signals the end of active hair growth and cuts individual hairs off from the blood supply and from the cells that produce new hair.
Telogen Phase
The third stage of your natural hair growth cycle is the Telogen Phase, a resting period when strands remain in their follicles but are not actively growing.
Exogen Phase
The final stage of the Hair Growth Cycle, when individual hair strands are released from their follicles and fall out. Now the whole process can begin again
1. PSORIASIS
Psoriasis is a skin disease in which the immune system becomes overactive causing skin cells to multiply rapidly. As a result, cells build up on the surface of the skin causing thick scaly patches.
TYPES OF PSORIASIS
● Plaque psoriasis : Plaque psoriasis is the most common type of psoriasis. About 80% to 90% of people with psoriasis have plaque psoriasis.
● Palmoplantar psoriasis: is a type of psoriasis that affects the palms of the hands and the soles of the feet. It is characterized by thickened, red patches of skin covered with scales or plaques.
● Scalp psoriasis is an autoimmune skin condition characterized by the rapid growth of skin cells, leading to the formation of thick, silvery scales and red patches on the
scalp.
1.1 SCALP PSORIASIS
Scalp psoriasis is a long-lasting autoimmune disease that causes your skin cells to reproduce too quickly. It creates thick, discoloured patches of skin (plaques) on the scalp and other areas around your scalp. These areas may include the hairline, forehead , back of the neck and skin around the ears.
SYMPTOMS
Mild scalp psoriasis symptoms are small, thin scales or flaking that looks like dandruff.
Moderate or severe scalp psoriasis symptoms include:
● Raised, discoloured (red, brown, grey or purple) plaques with a white or silvery
surface of dead skin cells.
● Plaques along your hairline, forehead, the back of your neck or on the skin around
your ears.
● Dryness , flakiness, Itching, Irritation or pain
CAUSES OF SCALP PSORIASIS
Immune system overreacts, causing inflammation, which leads to new skin cells growing too fast. Typically, new skin cells grow every 28 to 30 days. But in people with scalp psoriasis, new skin cells grow and move to the skin surface every three to four days. The buildup of new cells replacing old cells creates thick patches of skin. Scalp psoriasis can be due to environmental exposures and genetic factors that can include skin trauma, sunburn, medications, stress and other inflammatory or autoimmune health conditions.
1.2 PALMOPLANTAR PSORIASIS
Palmoplantar psoriasis is a form of psoriasis that affects the palms of the hands and the soles of the feet.
Palmoplantar Psoriasis
CAUSES OF PALMOPLANTAR PSORIASIS
The tendency to psoriasis is inherited, but it is localised on the palms and soles. It may be triggered by an injury to the skin, an infection, or another skin condition such as hand dermatitis. It may first occur during a period of psychosocial stress. Certain medications, particularly lithium, may be associated with the onset of flares of psoriasis.
SYMPTOMS
1. Thickened, red patches of skin on the palms and/or soles
2. Scaling or peeling skin
3. Cracked or fissured skin
4. Itching or burning sensation
5. Pain or tenderness

ALOPECIA AREATA
Alopecia areata is a common autoimmune disorder that often results in unpredictable hair loss.In most cases, hair falls out in small patches around the size of a quarter. There may be only a few patches, but alopecia areata can affect wider areas of the scalp. If there is a complete loss of hair on the scalp, doctors diagnose alopecia totalis. If there is hair loss throughout the entire body, the condition is called alopecia universalis.
CAUSES OF ALOPECIA AREATA
The condition occurs when white blood cells attack the cells in hair follicles, causing them to shrink and dramatically slow down hair production
SYMPTOMS OF ALOPECIA AREATA

DULL, DRY & FRIZZY HAIR
Frizzy hair occurs when the outer layer of the hair, called the cuticle, is raised, allowing moisture to pass through and swell the strands. The cuticle resembles shingles on a roof under a microscope and serves as a protective barrier for the inner layers of the hair shaft. Hair is primarily composed of keratin protein, with the cuticle being the outermost layer, followed by the cortex and medulla. The cuticle consists of flat, overlapping cells that can open and close. When properly sealed, it retains moisture within the hair shaft, reducing frizz. However, when dry, the cuticle opens up, becoming rough and causing frizziness.
CAUSES OF FRIZZY HAIR
(1)Hair Colouring
If the hair is coloured frequently, the chemicals in colour treatments tend to deplete the hair moisture over time.
(2)Heat Styling
Frequently using heat on your hair can cause frizz as well. Flat-ironing dries the hair out and can cause damage and frizz, the more heat styling is done, the more it damages the hair, the more the hair cuticles don’t lie down, causing friction and a frizzy hairdo.
SIGNS OF FRIZZY HAIR
Split ends, Dryness, Tangled hair, Excessive hair breakage, Lack of Shine
TREATMENT METHODS FOR FRIZZY HAIR
- Hydrolyzed Protein: Ingredients such as hydrolyzed keratin, hydrolyzed silk protein, and hydrolyzed wheat protein help strengthen the hair shaft, improve elasticity, and smooth the cuticle, reducing frizz and increasing shine.
- Silicone (Dimethicone, Cyclomethicone): Silicone-based ingredients form a protective barrier around the hair shaft, sealing in moisture and smoothing the hair cuticle to reduce frizz and flyaways. Look for water-soluble silicones to prevent buildup on the hair.
- Calcium Pantothenate – helps to improve the hair ability to retain moisture, which can contribute to smoother, less frizzy hair. It acts as a humectant, attracting and retaining moisture from the air.
- Humectants (Glycerin, Propylene Glycol): Humectants attract moisture from the environment and help retain it within the hair shaft, keeping the hair hydrated and reducing frizz caused by dryness.
- Emollients (Jojoba Oil, Shea Butter, Argan Oil): Emollient ingredients help soften and smooth the hair, providing hydration and lubrication to the hair shaft to reduce frizz and improve manageability.
